Desperation, originally uploaded by Benjamin Chertoff.
It’s not everyday when the the United Nations singles you out. For better or for worse, I’ll use E.B. White’s description of the organization, as “this lofty target scraping the skies and meeting the destroying planes halfway, home of all people and all nations, capital of everything, housing the deliberations by which the planes are to be stayed and their errand forestalled.” So I’m a little ecstatic (probably a little too much) that the United Nations photo account on Flickr chose this image as a favorite. Indeed, this was a rough day for dropping rations. At the previous drop-site we were all but overwhelmed. Few of my photos summarize the desperation in Haiti as concisely as this photo, and the sequence preceding and following it. Thank you U.N., as a neighbor, and a fellow citizen of the world.
