Yesterday Street Riders NYC gathered nearly 20 thousand cyclists in Times Square for a truly moving and meaningful ride up to Harlem, and then down the west side highway to Battery Park. At one point the peloton of single speeds, commuters, Citibikes (which the rideshare program made for the afternoon free in support of the ride) roller skaters and road racers stretched 30 blocks long. These amazing, passionate activists have been organizing massive bicycle rides throughout the city to protest racial inequality and police bias and brutality, as well as providing advance support and traffic clearance for some of the movement’s largest marches (first image). At the end of the ride, as we gathered at the lower tip of Manhattan under the deafening beat of the police helicopter hovering menacingly low overhead, Streetriders co-organizer @cheforlando_ held back tears as he told us the story of a childhood friend who was murdered by police. “This isn’t about fame,” he explained to the crowd about his motivation to help organize these rides. “For me, this is personal.” New York City, June 20, 2020. There’s a different vibe in uptown protests. It’s not so much about disruption as it is about uniting as a community. I’ve been particularly struck by the people we pass as we march, many of whom - because of the still-very-real pandemic - are unable stand with us physically.
